HISTORY
In 1930, Kilgore was a cotton and timber town. Streets were dirt and dollars were hard to come by. A year earlier, in the fall of 1929, the stock market collapsed and the nation fell into a depression that would last a dozen years.
As the economy stagnated, the price of cotton fell and the population of Kilgore shrunk from about 1,000 to 500.
The city’s fortunes were reversed in October, 1930 when oil was discovered in Rusk county. Three months later, a second successful well — this one in Kilgore — was completed and Kilgore boomed. In a matter of days the population jumped to 10,000.
And in 1930, amidst the bustle and grit of an oilfield boom, the Kilgore News was established.
TRANSITION, NEW SERVICES
Since 2001, after some decades of out-of-state corporate ownership, the Kilgore News Herald (a unit of locally-owned Bluebonnet Publishing, LLC) boasts local control and local management. Publisher/partner Bill Woodall is active in economic planning, downtown re-development, chamber of commerce and a number of local non-profit groups, making the newspaper a key partner in the city’s economic progress. Ad manager Valerie Melton and advertising executive Linda Ballard are key to the successes of the Chamber of Commerce and United Fund.
In concert with the global transition to a digital, knowledge-based economy, the News Herald and Bluebonnet Publishing have created KNH Marketing. The new division is designed with the explicit mission of helping local businesses meet their customers — old and new — on the Internet.
The traditional Kilgore News Herald, freshly re-designed and re-energized with a curious and vibrant staff, and KNH Marketing will help design internet “landing pages,” host websites for local organizations, maintain and service websites for local retailers and offer eCommerce solutions. The newspaper counts about 20,000 unique visitors and 2 million page views to its websites and delivers 6,500 copies of the printed newspaper to local readers each week.
Businesses looking for new ways to reach new markets will love dealing with KNH Marketing. We handle the hassle.
